Mara will work with the Council on the Environment of NYC (CENYC) to rebuild a database of community and school gardens, which includes updating the interactive map at http://www.oasisnyc.net/. She will use the data to conduct a series of analyses on the city’s gardens, including which can act as public compost locations, how many are actively testing their soil, and which gardens are partnering with schools. She will also work with CENYC to help launch a wholesale farmers’ market by making connections with the city’s bodegas (small, privately owned convenience and/or grocery stores), food pantries, and other mid-size buyers. Both of these projects seek to encourage a sustainable, local, and equitable urban food system and to expand access to local produce.
